Sylvester Wells

1938-2023

Artist's portrait

Sylvester Wells stopped Alfred Hair while he was on a sales outing in Cocoa Beach and expressed curiosity about what he was doing. Alfred showed him a few paintings and Sylvester asked him if it was lucrative. Alfred pointed to his Cadillac. Thus began Wells’ start with painting, but it wasn’t as easy as Alfred made it look. Wells then sought assistance from Harold Newton, who was well known especially around Cocoa. He spent countless hours watching Harold and his brother, Sam, paint, and gradually acquired the requisite skills. Peripheral to the cohorts in Fort Pierce and Gifford, he was a solitary figure. His primary calling though was to God, and later in life he became a preacher spreading the Word in ways complementary to his paintings.
