John Maynor

1948-2016

Artist's portrait

John Maynor trained as a commercial artist and was a well known sign painter in Fort Pierce; he commented that he must have painted half the signs in town. Like others, he had an inkling for art as a child and was consumed by drawing while other students were focused on the Three-Rs. When he learned of Alfred Hair’s success, he sought him out, but he became closer to Livingston Roberts and Sam Newton. One of the more obscure Highwaymen artists, when asked about a John Mayor painting lining against a wall in his room, Roberts said, “He’s more of a Highwaymen than lots of the others on the list.”
