Ellis Buckner

1943-1991

Artist's portrait

Ellis Buckner was more outgoing than his brother George, who became a more skilled painter. But to the Highwaymen a painting wasn’t sold until the oils had dried, and Ellis proved to be the better salesman. For a while they opened a studio in Miami. Ellis and his family lived upstairs. His wife Bettye oversaw the gallery sales. George, a more solitary man, painted at home in Gifford and delivered his paintings to the Miami gallery. Besides selling paintings from the gallery, the brothers vended their painting at Miami’s outdoor art fairs.
