Alfonso Moran

1930-2003

Artist's portrait

Alfonso Moran had presence — tall, handsome and well-dressed, he was not apt to labor in the fields. Rather he’d trained as a barber back home in Gifford, after serving in the Army during the Korean War. He was close with Alfred Hair, but was likely mentored as an artists with Harold Newton. His friendship with Alfred centered not around art but playing pool, in which Alfonso excelled. He let painting fade in favor of gambling. His skills, especially in billiard halls, drew crowds. Later in life diabetes took his legs and a stroke rendered his arms useless. Still his face maintained the quality of rubbed walnut showing his calm and good looks.
