Sybil Gibson

1908 - 1995

Sybil Gibson became an artist as a result her fascination with a piece of gift-wrapping paper she saw in a department store. When she was 54 years old, she proceeded to paint pictures of flowers and children on brown grocery bags. She would soak the bags to dissolve the glue and unfold the paper, then paint on the still damp paper. The tempera paints ran slightly, blending to yield a soft, dreamy effect. Faces dominate Gibson’s work, sadness belying her lyrical style. Many are haunting, seemingly with alter egos. She lived a vagrant’s life until surfacing in Alabama, blind and diabetic but painting. Her daughter explained that by penciling her name largely and boldly, Gibson “showed her importance with her signature.”
