Patricia Calamari

1955 -

"Art speaks to the best part of who we are as human beings," Patricia Calamari says about those she serves, all of whom suffer from profound mental and physical disabilities. Under her watchful eye, traditional therapy is abandoned. She shudders at the thought of mindless, labor-intensive activities such as "making nice place mats." Calamari's process involves two or three people working on a single painting that is completed during several sessions. By understanding which artists’ mark-making strengths can be best utilized to complement works-in-progress, she orchestrates the compositions by moving, turning and positioning the paintings and pastels among the participants.
