Kurt Zimmerman

1925 - 2017

Kurt Zimmerman's paintings are angst-ridden and "of the cosmos." He studies the dead animals, birds and fish that he finds lying by the riverside and painted their images from memory. He feels that he is bringing the creatures back to life and he is, to be sure, creating a new reality. Painting "expressionistically" and without deliberation, Zimmerman's pieces reveal his moral vision. Only upon completing a painting could he figure out how the image relates to his own life. His thoughts come alive as describes of wildlife, people and outer-space imagery with exceptional painterly style. In his machine-based paintings, vigorous brushwork crashes into his gear-like structures to hint at Zimmerman's sense of the world as becoming "fragmented and falling apart." He said, “In today’s world, if you don’t get stressed there’s something wrong with you.”
