John D. Gerdes

1913 - 2001

John Gerdes is known for his “inlaid paintings” and electronically driven sculptures. His art appears to be made by assembling small wooden pieces, but each work is tediously painted to mimic varieties of wood. He incorporated an impressive array of textures, knots, and grains to further delight the eye. Gerdes’ sculptures are three-dimensional versions of his geometric perspective based “inlaid paintings.” Using discarded computer circuit boards, he constructed elaborate edifices: casinos, churches, skyscrapers. Tiny bulbs blink while low sounds beep harmoniously.
