Jesse Aaron

1887 - 1979

Jesse Aaron began sculpting when he was 81 years old because, he said, the Lord directed him to carve. He worked with a chain saw and chisels and other woodworking tools. “I can see faces on anything,” he remarked. His sculptures reveal the personas that were suggested by the cypress and cedar branches and roots he had claimed. Occasionally, he burned the sculptures to add texture or alter their color; he often set nails in resin using egg cartons as forms to create eyes. His completed pieces maintain their rough forms, which acknowledged the artist’s conviction that God predetermined the content and that he only showed what was already there.
