Bryant Gowens

1918 - 2003

Bryant "Bubba" Gowens made sign-like images of guns. There is no attempt at narrative. He drew as many guns as he could fit onto pieces of scrap plywood. The guns were crudely outlined, their symbolism more potent than pictorial artifice. Glitter was added to give the guns additional presence. He was not a violent man, but he loved guns. "I wouldn't want to live in a house without a gun," he said. "Need it for protection." Placed in the yard or visible through a window of his Sanford home, they may have served to ward off potential intruders.
