Bettye Williams

1935 - 2017

Remembrances are at the core of Bettye Williams’ paintings. Her carefully executed visual reminiscences of rustic settings and placid scenes tap into our longings for a slower if not better past, for a place where the water is clear, the groves are full of oranges, the general store is well-stocked and repairing a broken car is considered family fun. Nobody locks his or her door in Williams' Florida.
Williams has fond memories. She recalls that in the family's "cracker" home, where "Mama cooked on the fireplace for a while using green wood from pecan trees, it smoked more than it flamed. Boards were missing from the floor next to the fireplace and you could see the hogs that belonged to the owner walking around underneath. Still, we had a home of our own."
